The Pickle – 11/20/23

This Week’s Featured Matchup

In the annals of sporting history, there have been legendary matchups – Ali vs. Frazier, Federer vs. Nadal, and now, brace yourselves for the clash of the Pickleball titans – Air Jordan vs. The Samurai Slammers.
Doc Z will lead his charges into battle against the Jordan Sorge led Air Jodan squad in front of a capacity crowd at the Total Athlete Indoor training facility. Action can also be viewed via live stream on the OV Pickleball Facebook page for those not fortunate enough to garner a ticket to the event. The winner should take over the top spot in the standings.

(AP Triadelphia, WV) As you are all aware, The Ohio Valley Pickleball Club is striving to make your Pickle experience a pleasant one, and not just your experience, but anyone who wants to take advantage of the facilities at Total Athlete (TA). One of the many perks we have been able to offer is club sessions. There are limited spots available for these sessions to limit the number of people waiting to play. We have increased the number of spots available for each session to allow for maximum capacity while limiting wait times to get on the courts. In order for this to work correctly, we encourage all members to pre-register for these sessions. This will ensure that you secure a spot in the session and will help make it enjoyable for all who attend.

Soon you will see a kiosk at TA. Upon arrival you will sign in at the kiosk for whichever event or session for which you pre-registered. If you did not pre-register, you may be able to grab a walk-in spot if spaces are still available. Again, the best way to secure a spot is pre-registration. We also ask that you attend all events for which you register or cancel your registration if unable to attend.

We are trying to be proactive in our approach to setting up sessions and will add sessions as the need arises. You are also able to add and register for your own group play through the CourtReserve app. We are also very RE-active in our approach and welcome any constructive feedback on how things are running and your personal experiences with the system. Our intent is to GROW the sport and make it fun for players of all ages and skill levels. You can help us and the PICKLE community by cooperating with the system and giving feedback when necessary.

What we don’t want is too many people waiting to play because the sessions are overcrowded. We can avoid this by securing your spot in each scheduled session or reserving court times for private sessions. Thanks for your cooperation in our efforts to make this enjoyable for everyone.

League Notes: Please remember that season passes are now available to all club members!! Also, it is important for all members to get in the habit of using Court Reserve (web browser or app) to reserve court times and register for Club Sessions.

Monday 11/13 – The highly anticipated match between league leading Nathan’s HotDogs and #3 Air Jordan turned into a total beatdown of the Dogs at the hands of Air. In Line 1 action Sorge and Boury were never tested by an overmatched Couhglan and Old Man Abraham. Hedrick and Huffman handled L. Donzella and Campbell just as easily at Line 2 not relinquishing a set. The DreamBreaker saw an overwhelming dominance by Air Jordan through 5 legs before a valiant 14-point effort in the final leg by Coughlan and Donzella fell short in the eventual 30-21 ending.

Thursday 11/16 – The “Basement Battle” did not disappoint. In the absence of Captain “Mob Boss”, En Fuego bounced back from the first week blanking to secure its first victory of the season over The GooterGates. The pair split Line play with GooterGates holding a slim 4-3 margin headed to the DreamBreaker. Strategy came into play yet again in the finale. In the back-and-forth affair, the “Mob Boss” made his presence felt from afar. His strategic prowess paid off as En Fuego held on for a 30-28 victory.

Saturday 11/18 – Picklebacks dismantle a reeling Big Al’s squad. An undermanned Big Al’s attempted to shuffle the line-up taking a page out of the Mob Boss strategy. This time it was to no avail. The Picklebacks didn’t blink in disposing of the Aces in straight sets at all three lines. With the Backs at full strength and the Aces needing to draw Mike Robinette from the alternate pool, it was bad from the start and got worse from there!

Sunday 11/19 – The much-anticipated match between the Slammers and the Crew turned out to be a rout on the scoreboard but was much closer than indicated. Lines 1 & 2 were swept in straights by the Crew. Zadrozney and Morgan kept it interesting but could not close against LeeBoy and Uncle Felix. The Dreambreaker gave us our first big comeback of the season in a see-saw battle. The Crew were able to overcome a 21-25 deficit in the final leg to win 30-26 completing the blanking of the slammers.

Weekly Spotlight

Bryan Law, Wheeling

We caught up with “The BearCat” Bryan Law of Ohio County Schools to gain some insight into OVPC’s best dressed Pickleball journey.

Good morning, Bryan. Thanks for agreeing to spend time with us today. So many fans have asked us to Spotlight you. Have you gotten used to having “fans”?
Wait…. I have fans? Now I’m nervous. What if I don’t live up to expectations? Is my hair OK? Will they see this?

Of course, they will! Our live feed of opening night drew over 600 views. But relax bud. They love you! You’re a legend. How has your experience been with OVPC?
What a great bunch of human beings. Sometimes they bust my chops, but I love it. I give it right back to them. All in all, it’s been awesome. They’ve been incredibly accepting and inviting. Except for that Zambito fella. Can’t quite figure him out yet.

Do you mind standing up and showing off your new pickleball attire?
I am standing up!! I don’t need to take this from you!!

Sorry, Sorry!! Why do you not Drive more?
Is that another height joke, Mr. Jokie Joke man?

Not at all, sir. I mean you’re known as a “dinker” not a “banger”. Does that bother you?
Ohhhhh, Sorry. Not at all. I love dinking. It’s really the key to my game. I’m a buck fifty soaking wet. I can only hit the ball so hard. I’ve found that the beauty of the game is in dinking and placement.

BearCat?? Where does that come from?
I’m not really sure, but I love it!! It says don’t mess with me!! I’ll tear you limb from limb, like a bear. But, also, hey look at how adorable I am, like a cat. Plus, a BearCat is fierce and relentless. Like me!

Speaking of “fierce”, tell us about the BearCat Slam.
I thought you’d never ask. It’s kind of become my signature. I use it often when it’s not even necessary. I just employ my incredible hops to gain the downward angle and…. Wham!! Drop the hammer. It’s virtually unstoppable. Just ask Diana Mey to see her Tattoos.

How did you get so good in such a short amount of time?
Couldn’t you just say, “quickly”? You had to say “short” again? It really hasn’t been that quick. I’ve been playing for quite a while. With summers off and 2 weeks for every holiday it gives me the upper hand on practice availability.

Any parting words for the fans? We are running short on time.
I love everybody. I hope to not let anyone……. Wait!! I see what you did there…
