The Pickle – 12/04/23

This Week’s Featured Matchup

Air Jordan remains unblemished through three weeks of the young season and has not showed any sign of slowing down. The PickleBacks, on the other hand, overcame a slow start to put two hashmarks in the W column in their last two outings.

The two will play the finale of week 4 on Sunday December 10th. The winner will have a leg up in securing a spot in the playoffs as we turn for home. This one could come down to strategy as they seem to match up pretty well on paper.

Monday 11/27 – In arguably the most thrilling match of the young season, Shayne Wilson led his charges to victory in a hotly contested battle under the canvas at TA. Line 1 ended in a 13 & 13 sweep by Captain Shayne and a hard charging Tyler McCullough over The Mob Boss and hard-hitting Chris Freeman. Line 2 saw Single T and Moose fall in a close 3 setter to the Commish and Seth setting up an epic back and forth Dreambreaker ultimately won by the Backs to pull out a thrilling 9-3 victory that was closer than the score indicated.

Tuesday 11/28 (resch) – Air Jordan continued to demonstrate its prowess by sweeping the Samurai’s. In Line 1 action Sorge and Johnny B handled the Slammer’s Alpha’s in straights. The Slammers looked to close the gap in Line 2 with JoJo Morgan and Pat Zadrozney getting out to a commanding lead by winning the first set and leading 8-3 in the second. However, Diana and Huff of Air Jordan had different ideas making the epic comeback in set 2 and cruising in the third for a critical 3 team points and a momentum shift. The shift led to a DreamBreaker victory despite an 11-5 effort from Z and JoJo in the 5th leg.

Saturday 12/2 – And the rout was on!!! The pickle machine that is The Kitchen Crew wasted less than hour in disposing of an outmatched GooterGate squad. Seems that Willy V’s strategy of selecting homegrown, indoor players is paying off as the Crew has only dropped one set while compiling a spotless record to take a stronghold on the league standings. Can anyone stop this juggernaut? All of this while holding back the secret weapon……. THE DRAGON!!!!

Sunday 12/3 – A sibling rivalry played out on Sunday at TA which saw little brother Al get the best of big bro Nate in a clean sweep. The actual match was closer than the card. Line 1 and 2 both went three sets in favor of the aces before the captains “exchanged pleasantries” prior to the DreamBreaker. A 12-5 final leg by the HotDogs was not enough to overcome the 25-5 margin set by Big Al and Company in the first five. The Aces hung on for the sweep 30-17 and slid in to the all-important fourth slot in the league standings.

Weekly Spotlight

Tom Abraham, Wheeling

We recently had a chance to sit down with Tom “Grumps” Abraham of Abraham Land Design after a pickle session at Total Athlete. I am still recovering.

Tom, thanks for taking some time to answer some questions for us.
Son, I’m old enough to be your great grandfather. Show some respect. That’s Mr. Abraham to you.

Yes sir, Mr. Abraham! I was trying to break the ice a bit.
Let’s keep the ice right the way it is Jr. or I’ll “break your ass”!!

(Thought Bubble: they definitely aren’t paying me enough for these interviews) For sure, let’s just get into it. How do you compete with these younger guys and ladies?
I grew up in a time when nothing was handed to us. We had to work hard for everything, walk everywhere we went and do a full day’s work on the farm before school. I’ll put my fitness against any of the rest of these pretty boys.

Sorry, Sorry!! Why do you not Drive more?
Is that another height joke, Mr. Jokie Joke man?

Wow, that’s funny! It was also nice to see you smile there.
That wasn’t a smile. That was my prune juice kicking in!

Ohhhh Boy (Thought Bubble: They definitely aren’t paying me enough!) I heard you were quite the multi-sport athlete back in the day. Has that helped you with Pickle?
I think football has helped me the most. The training was rigorous back then and my agility and hand eye coordination was definitely enhanced by my days on the gridiron.

It’s so dangerous!! Do you think the changes in the helmets really help with concussion risks?
Considering our helmets were made out of leather…… Yes, I do!!

OK, this is going well. Let’s shift gears and lighten it up a bit. I’ve heard you got a new Puppy. What breed and what did you name it?
He’s a black lab puppy and we call him “Duece”.

Awe… “Duece”, how cute. Why Duece?
That’s precisely the number of seconds it will take me to knock your teeth out if you ever use the word “cute” again in reference to anything I say.

Sorry, Sir. That’s a menacing name. The burning question on everyone’s minds… Do you enjoy competing against your two sons and grandson?
I just enjoy competing, period! But yes, I especially like any chance I get to do anything with my family. Being able to be competitive with them at my age is just a bonus. These are D1 college athletes we are talking about. It is something I can hang my hat on for sure. Being able to spend time with your grandson is especially rewarding.

How cute!! Sorry, gotta go! See ya!!!

Remember to spotlight your outdoor walkways!

Brett Andrews

Brett signed up for the inaugural “Hump Day Early Bird” last Wednesday at 6 am (with three other members). He withdrew due to illness at 2:30 am without notifying any of the others (who all showed up). Notify your group if you can’t make it or risk making an appearance here! In Brett’s defense, he didn’t want to call or text those with young children in the middle of the night!!
