The Pickle – 12/25/23

This Week's Featured Matchup? Weeeee.... Have It!!!

Picklebacks vs The Samurai Slammers

We are winding down the season and headed for the playoff stretch. Here are two teams at a crucial point.  One looking to enhance its playoff position in the Backs and one trying to find a way to make it in the Slammers. Both teams have had different fortunes with the Backs starting slowly before finding a nice rhythm lately and the Slammers getting out of the gates quickly before slowing down a bit.

Regardless, both teams are loaded with local talent and this one should be a good old-fashioned slugfest!! Time will tell how this matchup will shake out.

Santa-Chet did not Disappoint!

(AP Triadelphia, WV)

On Saturday 12/23 the OVPC held its first annual Christmas Party and it was a huge success!!  Nearly 40 Picklers were “Under the Canvas” at Total Athlete at one point and all in attendance were enjoying themselves. Santa-Chet had gifts for everyone, breakfast burritos, tater tots, charcuterie boards, cookie trays, beverages galore and even a sizeable 50/50 raffle ($350 take home)!!

The Grinch showed up and tried to steal the Christmas Spirit but the natives of Pickle-ville filled his heart with joy when they invited him to play a few games. He was later seen playing with children in attendance with their parents.  His heart grew 3X that day!! Mimosa Matches where the highlight of the morning although the clean up crew didn’t think so. Beer steins, t-shirts, koozies, paddle protectors, paddle grips, sweatshirts and more were some of the booty that members received as door prizes. Several artists rendered Christmas music during play including Dolly Parton, Snoop Dogg, B.E. Taylor and even the The DropKick Murphy’s rendition of LeeBoy could be heard ringing from TA.

Look for similar social events to pop up throughout the year as this was a huge success.  An enormous thank you to Nathan Peluchette and Joel Peluchette for bringing us such a great day of fun and friends. They really do need recognized for all they have done for all of us. All we need to do is show up and have fun.  These guys make that possible for us to enjoy the game and the facility whether in person or watching on the big screen at home.  And an even bigger shoutout to all of you, the members. Without you, we are NOTING!! If you were one of the unfortunate ones who couldn’t make it, watch it back on YouTube and don’t miss again!!!

League Notes: It is important for all members to get in the habit of using Court Reserve (web browser or app) to reserve court times and register for Club Sessions.  Don’t forget to check in upon arrival for your session at our brand-new, user-friendly Kiosk!

REGISTER ON COURT RESERVE

Monday 12/18 – We witnessed a Thriller only rivaled by Michael Jackson in the mid-80’s. Line 1 action had patrons asking for their money back as they paid for the whole seat but only used “the edge”. Superb play by all four players on the court with the Ace’s coming out on top. Line 2 was almost as thrilling as the “pups” battled hard only to fall short in straights.  The Breaker did not disappoint as it was back and forth until the “pups” sealed the deal by holding their end of the 5th leg!

Wednesday 12/19 – En Fuego, looked at by many as a contender early on, continued to struggle as they dropped another one in the Breaker to Air Jordan. Sorge proved to be too much in Line play and in the Breaker with Gregg Boury elevating his game to compliment the Phenom nicely.  En Fuego stayed in the match until the end largely in part to strong performance by the elder Sorge and partner Seth Abraham throughout the night, but it was not enough to pull the upset!

Thursday 12/28 – The PickleBacks will take on the Samurai Slammers with a chance to jump into the number 2 slot in the League Standings with a sweep of Captain Z’s squad. Z has already placed a sizeable wager against this probability!!

Saturday 12/30 – Nathan’s HotDogs will take on the GooterGates to close our 6th round of regulars.  The top four is out of reach for both squads but don’t expect either to lay down.  Expect another sibling rivalry at line 1 which is always must see TV!!

Weekly Spotlight

Chris Freeman, Wheeling

Can you believe we were able to corral this guy for an interview.  Get your Popcorn ready.  Chris Freeman is a guy who pulls no punches!

Wow Chris, thanks for agreeing to this interview. We are excited to have you here in the player’s lounge.
If you coming over here and interrupting my viewing the match on court 3 is “me agreeing to an interview” then, You’re Welcome.  I’ll give you 5 minutes of my time so organize your thoughts there Junior!

Have you been enjoying the Fall Brawl League that everyone is raving about?
Why, Yes!!  Of course! I love to give up my evenings to come out here and get my tail kicked. On paper we look great.  On the court we look like…. Well, PAPER!!  Toilet Paper to be exact. I’m not used to this.  Chris Freeman is a winner!!  I win at everything. Get these guys out on the tennis court!!  I’ve been playing Pickle for like 5 minutes.  I’ve enjoyed none of those minutes. What kind of question is that?  Do better son!

Did you just refer to yourself in the 3rd person there?
I did!! Do you have a problem with that?  All of the top athletes do it these days.  Are you saying I’m not a top Athlete?

Of course not! Let’s just move on the scripted questions. Do you plan on playing in the DUPR Doubles league coming up?
DUPR Doubles? Who the hell are you? Dr. Suess?

Well, yes, I am. Green eggs and ham. I will be there. I will not care. Red fish, blue fish, one fist, two fists!!

You’re pushing it Pal!!

Has your tennis background helped you with Pickleball?
I was told it would. Whoever told me that is on my list of people that are not trusted by Chris Freeman.  We keep stealing one line of league play only to lose in the DreamBreaker. What even is that? The only Dreams it’s breaking is our Dreams of bringing home the title which is the only reason we play these matches anyway.  Isn’t it?

You did it again.
Did what?

Never mind. Do you feel like your reputation as a hard hitter is warranted?
Would you like to find out?

Actually, No. I will take your word for it?

Remember to spotlight your outdoor walkways!

Mike Robinette

Mike did not join the Fall Brawl League, yet no player in the league has logged more matches!!  Not only has he played the most matches, but he has also steadily improved to the point he has created headaches for the competition committee as “sub”. Join the DAMN league next time MIKE!!

Upcoming Events By:

(AP Triadelphia, WV)

As you all know, the club is growing, and we are trying to bring more and more events to make it more enjoyable while at the same time improving our skills.  One of the key elements to great doubles play is knowing your partner as well as you know yourself. It is important that the pair work as unit rather than two great individual players that have no idea what shot their partner will hit in any given situation (unless you are playing with the Mob Boss and you can count on hard topspin drive in all situations). Our current open-play format does not lend itself very well to this concept as we are constantly changing partners.

In addition to our Upcoming Kings of the Court event, we are excited to announce DUPR DOUBLES!! This will be a league type event where you pick a partner and play one match per week against another team in the league. You will have the entire week to schedule and play the match considering the availability of all four players.  NO SUBS. We are hoping to have three levels of play, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0.  Members may partner with a “non-member” guest.  You will be responsible for their registration fee at booking.

Choose our partner and level wisely.  We are trying to make this multi-level league as competitive at all levels as possible!! See you all on the courts!

We graduated 14 students from our Intro to Pickle series this weekend. It has been very successful in introducing new players to the Club, the facility, and the Sport. We plan on having another. Please share with your friends who want to start. Have them follow us on social or visit the site. Intro series is brought to by:

Please be courteous to all players during open play club sessions. Remember, we may have various skill levels on the court at one time. More competitive balance can be assured by reserving private group court times.
